PartsSource has released our inaugural State of Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) Insights Report. The report highlights key industry trends and provides data-driven insights that demonstrate how top HTM leaders are addressing the most pressing challenges in ways that improve clinical asset availability, reduce operating costs, and drive productivity. By making this data publicly available, we advance our mission of Ensuring Healthcare is Always On®, enabling healthcare providers to make informed, strategic decisions. PartsSource PRO® clients already benefit from regular data-driven discussions, and this report extends these insights to the broader HTM and Supply Chain community.
The State of Healthcare Technology Management (HTM) Insights Report was recently featured in the article “State of the Industry Report Charts Path Forward for HTM Teams” in 24×7 Magazine.
Chris Langmeyer, Director of Strategic Partnerships at PartsSource, is presenting select findings and insights from the report during his presentation “Data-Driven Decision Making to Increase Asset Availability and Reduce Costs” on April 16th at MD Expo SoCal 2025 in Temecula, California.
Healthcare Faces Mounting Financial and Operational Pressures
In today’s healthcare environment, rising costs, labor shortages, and supply chain disruptions are straining provider resources. A PartsSource survey of HTM leaders revealed the prevalence of concerns around clinical assets, as clinical asset availability affects the ability to serve patients and impacts a healthcare providers ability to deliver reliable healthcare.
“Healthcare expenses are rising faster than revenue, eating away at profit margins and leaving less for hospitals, health systems and medical practices to invest in new services, new technologies and new people to remain competitive,” said Philip Settimi, MSE MD, President and CEO of PartsSource.
“To optimize clinical availability, the healthcare industry must understand and act on the bigger picture of evidence-based, data-driven, and technology-enabled solutions for medical equipment management to keep clinical service lines operating effectively and reliably.”
Key Data Insights: Five Opportunities for HTM Optimization
Drawing on proprietary data from more than 5,000 hospitals and survey responses from HTM leaders nationwide, the State of HTM Insights Report identifies five key opportunities for healthcare providers to optimize operations, control costs, and enhance team productivity.
- Translating Availability Trends to Impact: Medical equipment part backorders surged nearly fivefold post-pandemic, creating supply chain bottlenecks. Tracking availability and items on backorder can help you plan stock ahead or choose alternative sources.
- Eliminating Complexity and Costs in Equipment Service: Providers manage an average of 146 service contracts per hospital, often with wide cost variances—one analysis showed identical contracts ranging from $7,920 to $18,600 for the same model. Choosing providers that provide benchmarked data can help you reduce costs and improve service and quality
- Optimizing Cost and Quality for Service: ISOs performed the same or better than OEMs 91% of the time across six key service dimensions. Using data such as six key service performance measures can help improve the process and cost when choosing where to service your medical equipment.
- Understand Tariff and Inflationary Impacts to Inform Budget Planning: Medical equipment parts inflation reached 4.6% in 2024, exceeding traditional budget expectations. Tracking these fluctuations in the prices of medical equipment replacement parts can help you accurately budget for upcoming expenditures.
- Optimizing Cost and Quality of Parts: Compatible aftermarket biomedical parts had an average QRR of 1.7%, compared to 0.5% for OEM replacements. Understanding differences in the quality return rates between OEM and compatible medical equipment parts can help you find potential savings and make informed buying decisions.
Providers Weigh In on the Value of Data-Driven HTM Strategies
HTM professionals featured in the report underscored the growing need for data-driven decision-making.
“In the past, clinicians would request equipment replacements simply based on age, but now we require objective data,” said Jamie Elderkin, Director of Biomedical Engineering at Bassett Healthcare Network. “We need data on patient impact, ongoing costs, and serviceability before making these decisions.”
Kevin Krantz, Manager of Clinical Engineering at the University of Maryland Medical System, echoed this sentiment, stating: “Rather than waiting hours for an external technician, I could have an in-house specialist fixing equipment in 20 minutes. I need data to prove the ROI of training our staff instead of outsourcing service.”
Transforming Medical Equipment Management with Data
As hospitals navigate economic and operational challenges, access to reliable, actionable data is more critical than ever. With the release of the State of HTM Insights Report, PartsSource continues to lead the transformation of medical equipment management, ensuring providers have the insights they need to reduce costs, streamline operations, and maintain seamless clinical availability.
